Blue Lotus is more than a plant to get you “high”….
In the vast mythos of ancient Egypt, few symbols are as powerful and evocative as the blue lotus—the flower that was said to be the first thing to arise from the primordial abyss. The sacred blue lotus (water lily) was the flower most commonly used in the Early Kingdom and the ancient Egyptian word for lotus, 'Seshen'.
According to botanists, what happens is that the flowers of the blue lotus close at night. The new buds form under the water, and blossoms that have reached the end of their cycle sink back beneath the water. The lotus was the only flowering plant in Egypt that bloomed continuously throughout the year. Because of this, the blue lotus became a natural solar symbol and corresponded to the Goddess and process of creation and the continuance of life.
I am currently the High Priestess of the Blue Lotus Coven, we embrace this symbolism to connect with the divine energy of the goddess Isis, known in Egypt as Auset.
What is Isis’ connection to the Blue Lotus?
The blue lotus (technically a water lily) played a significant role in Egyptian mythology and religious life. Its deep blue-purple petals opened each morning to reveal a radiant golden center, mirroring the rising sun and embodying the essence of renewal and rebirth. T
In the Temples of Isis, the blue lotus was offered to the goddess as a symbol of purity and rebirth.
As a Goddess whose quintessential power is rebirth and regeneration, Isis is closely connected with the blue lotus. In fact, several surviving statues show the goddess's head emerging from the center of the primordial lotus. At the Temple of Isis (Auset) at Philae, carvings depict bouquets of lotus and papyrus flowers offered to Isis, symbolizing the purity needed to cleanse the temple space. The very hieroglyph for "to offer" included a long-stemmed lotus, emphasizing its sacred role in Egyptian spiritual life.
The lotus often appears as part of Isis’ headdress, particularly in later periods. By the time the worship of Isis expanded beyond the borders of Egypt, the lotus flower of Egypt came to be almost exclusively associated with Isis.
As a goddess of magic, wisdom, and healing, Isis (Auset) is intimately connected with the blue lotus, a symbol of regeneration. She embodies the energy of rebirth, as seen in her role in resurrecting her beloved Osiris after his dismemberment by Set. In this myth, the blue lotus plays a crucial part: as Isis (Auset) searched for the missing pieces of Osiris, she discovered a blooming lotus along the banks of the Nile—a symbol of resurrection and hope. Isis used this flower in her magical quest to restore Osiris to life.
In some statues and depictions, Isis (Auset) is shown emerging from the primordial blue lotus, highlighting her divine role in creation and regeneration. She is a goddess of new beginnings, one who can help each of us rise from the challenges of life renewed and empowered.
What is the Blue Lotus used for?
The Egyptians used every part of the Blue Lotus. Flower heads of the lotus were soaked in wine to prepare a special intoxicating and fragrant drink for banquets and festivals. The root of the lotus could be eaten raw or cooked to the consistency of egg yolk. Its seeds were ground into flour for bread. The ancient herbalists used a concoction of the lotus to increase libido. Even Lotus seeds and pods were used as antidotes to love spells, and any part of the lotus carried upon the person ensured divine blessing and good fortune.
“Celebrate a good day, place balsam and sweet scent at your nose, on your breast garlands of lotus and love apples...” ('Song of the Harpist' in the tomb of Neferhotep.)
The lotus flower contains euphoric chemicals that produce an effect through the dispersion of its fragrance. Its essence has a particularly potent impact on our subtle bodies.
Through its aphrodisiac and euphoric properties, it creates a link between an individual's analytical and higher, intuitive mind.
This combination creates within the individual a longing for the higher spiritual kind of love and the seeking of pleasure that is found in union with the Divine.
