Is Tarot Evil?

If you've ever done a Google search online about tarot cards, you've probably come across the question, "Is tarot evil?” or "Are tarot cards evil?" These are common questions among those who are spiritually curious and those who are wary of Tarot cards because of their portrayal in popular culture or religious teachings.

It’s important to understand that tarot is not inherently evil; rather, it is a sacred and ancient practice that can be used as a powerful tool for self-reflection and personal growth.

Tarot has a rich hsiutory that dates back hundreds of years (the actual date is uncertain, but around 1430s).

The earliest tarot-like cards were created in Italy in the 1430s by adding 21 specially illustrated cards, called trionfi ("triumphs"), and the il matto ("the fool") card to a standard four-suited deck. The purpose of these cards was originally used for entertainment and gameplay.

Around the 18th century, people began to assign meaning to each card and use the cards for divination, each representing aspects of the human experience. Despite misconceptions, tarot was never intended to be a source of darkness or evil; instead, it was used for spiritual guidance.

One example, I like to refer to is the Wheel of Fortune card. On this card, you will find the Hebrew name for God, יהוה (YHVH), written around the wheel. This sacred name highlights the divine aspect of tarot, indicating that its purpose is aligned with the Lord and the pursuit of higher wisdom.

Rather than promoting something sinister, the tarot incorporates elements of divine guidance, showcasing that it is meant to uplift and guide.

Why Do Some Religions Disapprove of Tarot?

Some religious doctrine contributes to the perception of it being evil. Many religious teachings discourage practices as forms of divination, believing they may lead one astray. However, just because something is not approved by certain belief systems does not make it inherently evil.

Tarot cards are tools—much like a compass—that can help us navigate the paths of our lives. They have no inherent power for good or evil; instead, their influence depends on the intentions of the person using them. Tarot cards are a sacred tool for seeking spiritual guidance and self-reflection.

How do Tarot Cards Work?

Tarot cards present us with symbols and archetypes that resonate with our situations. These special symbols offer deep insights into our subconscious mind. For example, the Major Arcana represents significant life lessons, while the Minor Arcana provides insight into everyday experiences.

It is not about predicting doom or channeling negative energy; instead, it’s about empowering ourselves to connect with our inner wisdom.

Tarot can help us understand our motivations, address our fears, and make more informed life decisions when used correctly. It acts as a mirror to our inner selves, allowing us to see clearly without bias.
