What are Ghosts? And how can I protect myself from them?

Are ghosts real? This question has haunted humanity for centuries. From ancient civilizations to modern-day ghost hunters, the existence of spirits has been a topic of fascination and debate. But do ghosts actually exist? Are they the souls of the departed or something entirely different?

Drawing from the esoteric teachings of Manly P. Hall, we can explore the nature of ghosts and why understanding them is essential for spiritual protection.

In Unseen Forces, Hall explains that ghosts are not just the souls of the departed. Instead, various substances are called “ghosts.”

Etheric and Astral Shells or Spectres: When a person dies, their physical body is not the only thing that disintegrates. The spiritual being sheds layers, including the mental, emotional, etheric, and astral bodies. In essence, many of the ghostly encounters people have are with these etheric remnants or astral shells rather than spirits with full consciousness. This explains why some apparitions seem to mindlessly repeat actions, get stuck in a cycle and are unable to communicate intelligently with the living. (We will talk about the soul in a moment, hang tight!)

Elementals: Other forces or entities called Elementals—beings made from the basic elements (earth, water, air, fire) that take on these discarded shells, like a mask, animating the shell. The shell will have memories and mannerisms. Thus, when someone is communicating with a past loved one, the truth is that it is likely an elemental masquerading in that loved one’s astral shell.

Where Does the Soul Go After Death?

The soul, according to Hall, is the spiritual garment that contains all of a person’s experiences, lessons, and deeds (Karma). As the soul moves through spiritual planes after death, it discards its more material (denser) attachments, leaving behind astral and shells that may linger in the physical world.

These remnants often contribute to what we perceive as “ghosts,” while the true soul continues its journey.

Can a soul choose to stay behind? Yes. Sometimes, the transition of death is difficult due to unresolved karma and earthly attachments. Ghosts—especially those tied to a specific location or object—often have unresolved attachments. Hall mentions that earthbound spirits may linger due to unfinished business, deep emotional attachments, or strong ties to material things.

In some cases, these entities aren't even aware they are dead, mainly when the death was sudden or traumatic. They become trapped in a liminal space between life and death, creating an emotional imprint on their surroundings.

Special rites and rituals can assist “the lost souls” in returning to the higher realms and continuing their journey.

How Do Ghosts Affect Us?

While many people view ghost sightings as harmless, Hall suggests that these unresolved energies can have a more profound effect. Ghosts, whether actual spirits or etheric shells, can drain the energy of those who encounter them, especially in haunted environments. This is where the need for spiritual protection becomes paramount.

If you’re a paranormal investigator, you’re likely familiar with the different types of hauntings. But understanding the true nature of ghosts is key to conducting successful investigations. Whether you're just starting out or looking to advance your skills, becoming a paranormal investigator involves more than just chasing spirits. It requires a deep understanding of spiritual energies, how to communicate with them, and—most importantly—how to protect yourself.

Interested in learning how to become a paranormal investigator or looking for structured guidance? Paranormal Protection Toolkit. includes everything you need to safeguard your energy, including rituals and protection spells specifically designed for paranormal investigators. It’s also a great companion to any paranormal investigator course or paranormal investigator training you might be pursuing.

Protecting Yourself from the Paranormal

Encountering a ghost can be an overwhelming and draining experience. In 2010, I was a ghost tour guide for Ghost and Gravestones in Saint Augustine, Florida. Working in energetically intense environments (especially a haunted jail) can lead to feelings of exhaustion and spiritual vulnerability. I was too tired even to protect myself and would sometimes bring home unwanted spiritual attachments from haunted locations.

It’s been almost 15 years and I have learned a lot since then! I studied how the energetic bodies (auras work), how to cleanse them and protect them and how to use witchcraft to arm myself with protection.

And now you, too, can have the Paranormal Protection Toolkit.

Designed specifically for those navigating spiritually charged environments, the toolkit provides:

Energy Protection Rituals: Learn to seal your energy field from harmful forces.

Cleansing Techniques: Remove unwanted spiritual attachments and restore balance.

Protection Magick: Craft powerful spells to guard yourself against spiritual attacks.

The Paranormal Protection Toolkit empowers you to not only understand the unseen forces around you but to actively protect yourself from them. Whether you’re a paranormal investigator, a ghost hunter, or someone who simply feels drained by certain environments, this toolkit will give you the tools to safeguard your energy.

As Manly P. Hall describes, ghosts are far more complex than spirits wandering the earth. They are remnants of energy, leftover etheric and astral forms, and elemental beings that can interact with our world in surprising ways.

If you frequently interact with paranormal energies or if you feel spiritually drained after a strange encounter, I invite you to explore the Paranormal Protection Toolkit. It’s time to take control of your energy and protect yourself from the unseen.
