The Three Secret Keys to Mastering Tarot Reading
When I was 14 years old, I discovered tarot cards for the first time at a Renaissance fair. I remember watching the old woman unfold the beautiful cards. As she spread them out, I was instantly connected to their colors. Now, I know this deck, the Rider-Waite-Smith deck, but its energy in front of my young eyes was strong, sacred, and special. I knew these cards held wisdom beyond what I could imagine, and I was determined to find a deck. I would climb mountains, cross oceans, and travel to foreign lands to obtain this sacred tool. And I was only slightly disappointed when the old woman told me I could find a deck for sale at my local Barnes N Noble.
This journey to becoming a professional tarot reader takes about 14 years. At first, I was afraid even to pull them out when my Catholic mother was home. I hid the cards between different books. When I read, I relied heavily on the flimsy booklet, which gave tiny 8-word descriptions of the cards. But it was all that I had.
Sometimes, I’d pull a card, read its description, and try to understand what it meant in the context of my question. But something was missing. I wasn’t able to pick up on the deeper meanings. My readings felt mechanical, and I struggled to understand them until I was 18.
So, I put my cards away for a few years. I was in undergrad anyway, pursuing a degree in philosophy. There was no time for fortune-telling in Kant, Descartes, and Mill's research papers.
I broke out the cards again when I moved to Los Angeles in 2015. This time I had two things teenage me didn’t have: money and freedom. I found more info in Los Angeles’ bookstores, hippie new age stores, and even the public library than I ever had back East. When I researched, I could see effort and intention put into the cards' creators, A.E Waite and Pamela Colman Smith. I came to a new understanding of Carl Jung’s work on the archetypes and Joseph Campbell’s explanation of the monomyth.
This is when my tarot reading started to change. I got good at tarot when I discovered the symbology, numerology, and psychology patterns behind each card.
I distilled all this knowledge into my Intuitive Tarot Method, a comprehensive 6-lesson course (10 hours) designed to deepen their tarot practice.
The Three Secret Keys to Unlocking Tarot
1. Symbology
Every tarot card is filled with symbols—colors, objects, and gestures—that communicate directly with your subconscious mind. Learning to interpret these symbols is key to reading tarot intuitively. Rather than relying on memorized meanings, you begin to understand what each symbol is saying to you in that moment.
2. Numerology
Numbers hold powerful meanings in tarot, and understanding numerology allows you to see patterns across your readings. For example, the number 2 often represents balance or duality, while the number 5 signals change or conflict. This knowledge adds another layer of depth to your readings and helps you understand the cyclical nature of the cards.
3. Psychology
At its core, tarot reflects the archetypes of the human experience—archetypes that are embedded in our psyche. By understanding the psychology behind each card, you can connect with the deeper messages and themes present in every reading. This key is crucial for intuitive readings, as it helps you tap into the cards’ energy beyond their surface meanings.
